Rabenstein Castle towers over the village of Raben atop the ‘Steiler Hagen’ hill. Built in the mid-twelfth century as a watch point over the road, Rabenstein Castle was long considered impregnable thanks to its position atop the steep hillside and its strong defences. The cellar of the castle was able to stockpile large reserves – all that was missing in medieval times was a well in the castle grounds. The more accessible side facing the rear of the hill was defended by the massive keep and the gatehouse. The granite tower, around thirty metres in height, is the tallest part of the castle. As well as climbing the keep for a fantastic view over Hoher Fläming, a tour of the castle also includes a visit to the knights’ hall, the torture chamber, the iron cellar, the well, the barn with a rafter roof made of planks, the Rosemarie chapel, and the old bakehouse from the year 1860.
