When the Franciscan monastery was founded in 1480, construction of the church began with the choir in the north west part of medieval Jüterbog near the old town wall. The building is a three-nave brick hall, which was only finished 30 years later in 1510. However, the monastery and church did not prosper for long. Franciscan monk Bernhard Dappen denounced Thomas Müntzer, who also preached in Jüterbog at Easter 1519, to the Bishop of Brandenburg. The term "Lutheran" was used for the first time. In 1564 the monastery was handed over to the town. The monastery church became a Protestant parish church and the monastery building became a school. In 1577, Georg Schröter from Torgau installed the chancel of the church nave. In 1863, the boy’s school in the location of the former north wing was consecrated. The last service took place there in 1963. After a complete reconstruction, the "Kulturquartier Mönchenkloster" opened here in 2005.

The more than 500 year old Franciscan church with its eventful history is a prime example of the purposeful use of a historic building. From a Franciscan monastery to a cultural centre, the areal is now home to the town library, the cultural history archives, the stage, the museum and the town registry office. You can chill out in the cloister during the warmer months, where a range of different seating options invite you to relax. It also offers a lovely backdrop for intimate concerts and smaller events. There is also a monastery garden with a wide range of plants including lots of herbs and medicinal plants that can be used in your own kitchen. A water splash area and other play equipment have been installed for little visitors.
