The southernmost Cistercian monastery in Brandenburg lies directly on the River Elbe. The Convent of Marienstern was founded in the 13th century by the Lords of Ileburg (Yleburch). The nuns gathered daily for prayer in the monastery church, an imposing early Gothic brick-built church. In 1539, the Reformation also reached Torgau. The monastery was dissolved.

The monastery buildings were partly rebuilt, and some parts were removed in the 16th century after the dissolution of the monastery. The monastery church, the refectory and the Abbess’ old house are still visible today, as are the remains of the walls of the former convent. The monastery is a monument of special national and cultural importance and is funded by the Federal Government, the State, and the German Foundation for the Protection of Historic Monuments.

Today, the monastery church of 1230, the newly designed cloister, as well as the Provostry and the hospice can be visited. Exhibitions, events and concerts are held in this historic setting. The old walls and the newly built dormitory today house a spiritual centre, the Ecumenical House of Gathering and Silence i.V. (ÖHBS). At present, four brothers from the Claretian Order live in the Catholic rectory next to the ancient Cistercian Monastery of Mühlberg/Elbe. Psalm prayers are held in the Brigittenkapelle Chapel of the Monastery Church and in winter in the Catholic church every day at 12 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Öffnungszeiten

The monastery church and cloister are open all year round. Guided tours through the monastery complex are available by arrangement.
