The monastery was built as a filiation of Lehnin Monastery and sponsored by the Brandenburg margraves. Before it was built in its current location in Chorin, an monastery was built in Marinensee near Lake Parsteiner See in 1258. Because the location proved to be unsuitable for commercial development, it was moved to Chorin. The monastery district extends over 13 villages, eleven farm buildings and two town courtyards. Because of its location in the border area, Chorin was at the centre of political events and, from the mid-15th century, the abbot even served as an electoral advisor. Between 1542 and 1543, the monastery was dissolved during the course of the Reformation and repurposed as a “Kammergut” (demesne). In the 19th century, the first archaeological and architectural history works were carried out involving Friedrich Schinkel among others.

The Early Gothic complex at Lake Amtsee was conceived a typical house and burial monastery for the Ascanians. Of the three-winged cloister, only the east and west wings remain along with the hospital – also known as the abbot’s house – and the church to the north. Of the farm buildings, a ruined mill and the brewery have survived.

The imposing building ensemble is one of the most important brick monuments in North Germany. Its special features include the west façade of the former three-nave monastery church and the detailed brick décor: Lilies and vine leaves, hewn stone friezes and an animal frieze as well as highly detailed vault consoles decorate the building. In the west wing, wall paintings from the early 14th century can still be marvelled at. The permanent exhibition opened in April 2017 provides information on the history of the monastery over 600 square metres. The “Choriner Musiksommer” concerts are among the most popular cultural events in Brandenburg. Further special exhibitions and art exhibitions take place in the chapter house and the infirmary.
