The Märkisch country was the cradle of the German optics industry. In 1801, the multi-spindle grinding machine built by Johann Heinrich August Duncker was patented, marking the beginning of glasses lens-making on an industrial scale as it could grind eleven lenses at a time.

Rathenow is still famous as the “optics town” beyond the borders of Germany. About 1,200 exhibits, some of which are unique and all of historic importance, are currently on display. A replica of the multi-spindle grinding machine and an original pair of Duncker glasses made at the Royal Optical Industrial Institute Johann Heinrich August Duncker are also on display.

Visitors are expressly encouraged to touch, try things out and experiment. Small, digital museum guides provide exciting, entertaining and in depth background information. A multi-sided flyer provides information on the historic, interesting and special exhibits in four languages. Special exhibitions, lectures, expert guided tours and, last but not least, the museum’s multi-faceted educational offerings complete this foray through the history of lenses.

The Optik-Industrie-Museum is on the attic floor of Rathenow Culture Centre, which offers a varied programme of events for all age groups.
