Active in the Biotope Network System: Gut Schmerwitz Estate (Soil association: organic)

People are proud of the natural environment that surrounds the Gut Schmerwitz estate in Hoher Fläming. It is therefore with good reason that the logo of the organic farm shows stylised hills, advertising the gently undulating landscape with its mixed woods, dry valleys and springs. The estate essentially helped to shape the biotope network system by planting kilometres of field hedges, avenues of fruit trees and deciduous trees, islands of trees in fields, and dry meadows.

Plenty of room for poultry

Nonetheless, laying hens are an important mainstay of the 1,550-hectare estate, with almost 10,000 chickens housed in four barns and roaming around the grounds of Schmerwitz and neighbouring Lübnitz. In addition to its chickens, the estate also has 100 German pigs and the old livestock breeds of Merino sheep and Angeln Saddleback pigs.

Leisure activities on the farm

A large, tree-shaded playground adjoins the holiday home. Stop off and have a wander around the listed manor house, the romantic manor church and the village itself.

Festivals

The doors of all the stables and around the estate are open once a year to coincide with the Brandenburg Landpartie ‘Open Doors Weekend’ on the second weekend in June. As once of the biggest hosts in Brandenburg, the Gut Schmerwitz estate welcomes up to 10,000 visitors to a two-day long gastronomic and cultural event.

Guided tours

As an organic farming demonstration business, the Gut Schmerwitz estate is always open to requests from groups of schoolchildren and students or other interested parties. A seminar room for up to 25 people is located in the manor house.

Catering

The Töpfer-Café, the pottery cafe in Schmerwitz, is run by the Scarabäus charity. The café offers indoor and outdoor seating, serving cold snacks, hot meals and drinks.
