In the northeast of Berlin is the UNESCO World Heritage Bauhaus in Bernau. Far from the noise and bustle of the city, the federal Bundesschule des Allgemeinen Deutschen Gewerkschaftsbundes (ADGB) was once intended to provide its members with education, recreation and a modern way of life. Designed by Bauhaus architects Hannes Meyer and Hans Wittwer, the Bauhaus' ideal of combining teaching and practice was put into practice at this site: All Bauhaus studios were involved in the construction. They did most of the planning themselves: from the building to the bed.

The various structures of the school building are staggered on a hilly sloping site and arranged on a Z-shaped ground plan, giving the building complex a loosened up and varied appearance.

The successful embedding in the landscape and the sensible orientation of the rooms, precisely calculated according to the position of the sun and the wind direction, are considered unique. It was these qualities that convinced the ADGB of the Bauhaus design in the architectural tender in 1928 and equally persuaded the UNESCO Commission in 2017 to declare the Bauhaus ensemble a World Heritage Site.

The former ADGB Bundesschule is still a building used for school purposes and is currently being set up as a nursing school. The Bundesschule is not a public building and therefore not freely accessible. A tour of the interior is only possible in conjunction with a guided tour. For more information, please visit www.welterbe-bernau.de.
