The large event and concert hall in Potsdam city centre is known for its unusual interior design and outstanding acoustics. It offers a diverse programme: whether classical music, film music concerts, jazz, world music or pop - the Nikolaisaal with its discerning yet non-elitist programme philosophy advocates barrier-free access to good music.

Special events include the “Potsdam Crossover Concerts” or the foyer concerts in “The Voice in Concert” cult series.

The Nikolaisaal looks back at an exciting history:

the current building is already the third building on this site. It was originally built in the 18th century as a residential building and was extended over time to include additional annexes and factory buildings in the courtyard. In 1904. the Protestant Nikolai community bought the premises to build a community hall in the courtyard. The building suffered serious damage during air strikes in the Second World War. Soon after the end of the war, the initial repairs could be made with the support and in the interest of the Potsdam radio station. The radio station used the community hall as a large radio studio outside of times of worship because it had excellent acoustics. However, no concerts were held here after 1958. The hall fell into disrepair. It was only after German reunification that the future of the building could be secured thanks to a generous financial donation from Potsdam´s twin city Bonn. The French architect Rudy Ricciotti proposed impressive plans to adapt and redesign the interior to suit the requirements related to cultural use while preserving the original façade. Around Euro 20 million were invested in the project. The Nikolaisaal was officially reopened on August 27, 2000.
