The history of Schloss Doberlug castle is inextricably linked to the Wettin dynasty of Saxony. The magnificent complex was once owned by the electors of Saxony. It experienced a new period of prosperity as a secondary residence and hunting lodge of the Dukes of Saxe-Merseburg in the 17th and 18th century under the Saxon secundogeniture of the same name. The castle was later used by Saxony and Prussia (after 1815) as an administrative and residential building and as a prison before it had to serve as barracks in the German Democratic Republic. It has been splendidly restored since 1999 and in 2014 it was the site of the first Brandenburg state exhibition “Prussia and Saxony. Scenes of a Neighbourhood”. Since 2017, the museum has been sharing the history of the monastery, castle and planned town in a permanent exhibition entitled “Doberlug and the Saxon Brandenburg”, with a modern presentation and multimedia exhibits. The natural history of the region is conveyed by the Lower Lusatian Heath Nature Park visitor information centre, which was opened in 2018 and has been awarded the Red Dot Design Award. The interplay between the castle and the neighbouring refectory and church of the former Cistercian monastery also creates a special charm.

Where Prussia meets Saxony

Four museums present the cultural landscape of the Elbe-Elster-Land

In the south-west of Brandenburg, the region on the rivers Elbe and Elster offers an exciting and varied cultural landscape. For centuries it was Saxon, but then fell into Prussian hands after the Congress of Vienna in 1815. Incidentally, you can also hear that you are travelling in the Saxony-Brandenburg border region: to the south of the border, affectionately known locally as the “Eierschecke” (Egg Custard) border because of the famous local cake, the dialect is comfortably Saxon, while to the north it becomes much clearer and Prussian.

The Elbe-Elster Museum Centre showcases aspects of the history of the Elbe-Elster-Land in four different buildings. You can find more information at www.museumsverbund-lkee.de.
